Nailed IT! The Top Trending Nail Looks for Spring – Hands Down
From the wacky to the weird to the whimsical, the warm weather is heating up with the hottest hues and unabashed, abstract art to adorn your digits and tickle your toes. Straight off the catwalk and right onto the boardwalk, check out the season’s sexiest stand-out styles and how to nail them!
Think Technicolor “candy box” brights and bolds splashed with unexpected and obscure mismatched-minded designs, such as stars, stripes, sketches, hearts, and free-handed etchings. Nothing is off limits for your digits and rules will be broken (but, not the nails!). And, you’ll want to treat your feet to the same fashion-forward, toe-tally cool trends. You’ll be stepping into spring with flip-flop –friendly, pretty pedis bursting with bright and beautiful tones, like bubblegum pinks, beachy-peaches, and baby blues, decadently dusted with grown-girl glitter, sparkly gems, and other unapologetic embellishments.
As gleaned from the runways this season, the metallic trend is having a major moment. Pulling off the precious metal mani can be done a few ways. We’ve taken a page out of designer Philip Lim’s playbook by layering a neutral/nude lacquer with an in-the-moment rose-gold French, a simple silver line, or a textured 24-karat tip. Another way is to simply swipe a platinum-pearly polish on top of any color for the unexpected, pristine pedi or refined, elegant mani.
Inspired by our forever-fave fashionista, Vera Wang, the high-shine sharpie shade is making its mark this season. Try striping vertically over bare nails or painted alongside vibrant pops of color for a captivating look. Curve around cuticle or touch-up tips with abstract angling for impressively cool and chic charm. Again, black is the new EVERYTHING!
Arguably one of the biggest nail trends this spring is the gilded cuticle craze. First spotted backstage at Rodarte, this fashion-forward frenzy outlines the outer edges of entire nail bed with glam-y, big-girl glitter or sexy, subtle shimmer. If you fear decorating your digits as such will liken you to a disco ball, try polishing peripherals with a grayscale hue or a sweet sorbet shade – or a different hue on each finger or toe! But, remember to keep base of nails bare to accentuate the ornamenting.
Nice Neutrals and Naughty Nudes
As seen on the dainty digits of the Marc Jacobs models, dreamy-creamy colors comprised of pink, pale, and pearlescent tones polished over almond and oval-shaped nails gives an instant lengthening effect, leaving fingers feminine and refined-looking. Can be worn alone for the classic, barely-there look, or as a base for strategically sprinkling shimmer, glitter, or three-dimensional adhesive appliques. Use as a clean canvas for drawing shapes, objects, and other nail niceties. Try this trendy trick: using a pigmented, muted pink base, be bold and paint a striking white line in a different direction of varying widths down/across each digit.
If vibrant, eye-catching colors gracing the runways were any indication for the pop of pastels this spring, then we’re about to nail it with this trend that isn’t just for accenting handbags, shoes, and athleisure wear. Channel your Crayola kid and draw on dots, stars, stripes, and geometric designs using bright, bold tones. And, don’t be shy! Try contrasting colors for an on-trend “clash of colors” appeal.
The old-school, requisite French gets a much-needed mani makeover with irregular, slanted stripes, asymmetrical angles, and cool, contrasting tip-to-base colors. Make digits worthy of double-take glances when glossing beds with a bold black lacquer and garnishing tips with an equally bold candy-apple red, tangerine orange, or Barbie pink. Or, opt for a sheer, neutral base and coat tips with a bright red or cobalt blue, unassumingly accented with a tiny gold rhinestone on the moon of the ringer finger. The fresh, fun, and flirty French looks best on shorter, rounded nail lengths.
Fifty Shades of Gray
This season’s monochromatic mani features fingertips coated with muted, neutral gray tones, specifically ones of the light lavender variety. For a twist on the tie-dyed trend, start with a sheer, neutral tone on base. Then, using a free-flowing brush, imperfectly wash tips in gray-toned polish for a “dipped in petroleum” finish. Make no mistake – muted, matted, and minimalistic black stains can also be exquisitely embellished with contrasting blocks of gray tones strategically swiped down the centers or across nail beds.
Shorter, rounded nails dominated the catwalks during NYC Fashion Week, aptly repping the trend toward androgynous street styles. A minimal-maintenance mani-must, this option keeps it simple and sexy with tons of color and design options. Plus, this length is office-friendly and workout-worthy.
Oval-shaped fingertips will always be the forefront on the fashion scene – whatever the weather! Classic and couture, pretty-yet-practical, these darling digits never go out of season and can manage to offer manicurists more space for wilder, wackier nail art and out-of-this-world originality, including jaw-dropping, three-dimensional decorations and amazing appliqués.
Probably the most popular of nail shapes is the subtle, simplistic almond-shaped nail. The much-welcomed successor to last season’s somewhat scary “stiletto” sharpness, the almond-shaped nail offers toned-down, feminine flair with just enough room to showcase beguiling beauty looks.
