Too Cool For School: Make the Grade with These Back-to-School Beauty Tips
No learning curve here! Your beauty routine doesn’t need to be put on the back burner just because you’ll be burning the midnight oil and severely time-challenged with other responsibilities. Bid those long, lazy, hazy days of summer farewell and transition into fall with these A+ beauty tips.
Going from beach-bumming to classroom-ready is a simple as doing your A-B-C’s and 1-2-3’s! Make the grade with these get-gorgeous go-to’s and kick off the fall looking fab, fresh, and flawless from September all the way to June!
Before Bed Prep and Prime
Wash and style your hair the night before. This means, shampoo, condition, use a reparative hair mask, blow dry, curl, straighten – whatever – before hitting the hay. This will not only save you a ton of time come morning, but your hair will automatically take on that “lived-in look” you love so much. Before heading out the door, just fix any funkies, like flyaways or weird and wacky creases you might’ve developed from sleeping. Also, this is the perfect opportunity to keep on with your effortless, beach-beautiful hair strategy. Feel free to either braid hair or put in bun atop head and let loose come morning. Ride those beach waves all year long!
There’s no time like the present to try out all those cute hair accessories you were just too lazy to try in the summer, like barrettes, headbands, scarves, etc. Flaunt your fall fashion-forward side, while still being functional.
Be a Cut Above
Your sun-drenched tresses are probably paying the price from all that sea and surf, especially if you weren’t keeping up with your hair care routine the past few months. So, send split-ends and scorched strands sailing with a trimming just in time for the new school year. Unfortunately, the summer can wreak havoc on our hair, so get campus-ready with a fresh fall dusting of your ‘do.
Embrace Your Natural Ombre
According to beauty insiders, the ombre look isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Great! One less thing to add to your back-to-school beauty list. Simply let your sexy, sunlit highlights grow out naturally. Your darker roots will pair well with your incoming, paler complexion during the cooler months and you still get to keep your summer memories.
Fall is usually an introspective time for many of us, as we seem to become miraculously motivated and engaged in new beginnings, unceremoniously awakening from our once-carefree reveries that embraced us during those long, sun-drenched days on the sand. However, don’t do anything drastic! Although you may be fantasizing about going from platinum to black or chopping it all off into a pretty pixie – PLEASE DON’T Keep it simple and transition slowly. Instead, grow out your bangs or cut new ones, change your part, get a few strategically-placed lowlights, etc. Don’t do anything you may regret until you’ve settled into the school season. Right now, you’ve got too much on your plate, i.e., classes, homework, work, kids, family, friends, etc. Although back-to-school is an exciting time to experiment with burgeoning beauty trends, you may want to hold off on any hair changes until you’ve got a hold on your new schedule.
If you totally fried your locks during the warmer months (bad girl!), try to undo at least some of the damage with this easy-breezy DIY at-home hot oil treatment that your hair is going to flip for. Depending on length of your locks, heat approximately 1/4 – ½ cups store-bought extra virgin olive oil in microwave until hot, but not too hot, you don’t want to sear your scalp or fingers with hot oil the night before the first day of school. Carefully apply the oil to dry, damaged areas of your hair, such as ends/split ends and outermost layers that have seen their fair share of the sun. Cover with an old shower cap or disposable conditioning cap you can purchase at your local beauty supply and let sit for one hour. For an even more intensive, deeper, salon-inspired treatment, wrap a hot towel over the shower/conditioning cap and leave for 1 hour. Depending on just how damaged your strands are, shampoo with a mild, moisturizing shampoo, like antioxidant and marula oil-infused L’Ange Luxe Marula Oil Hydrating Shampoo ($22), while conditioning only your ends with L’Ange Indulge Marula Oil Hydrating Conditioner ($24).
Stop the Pop
Stop being the human zit zapper and keep your fingers away from your blemishes. Popping pesky pimples may be instantaneously gratifying, but your skin will pay the price in the long run with scarring and toughened texture issues. So, stop! Instead, see clearer skies ahead by cleansing every night with a gel-based facial cleanser, or, better yet, be a Seoul sister and implement the double cleansing regimen created by the original beauty gurus – the Koreans. In the meantime, go undercover with a lightweight concealer to cover up the incriminating zit.
Buffy the Dead Skin Slayer
Gently exfoliate top layer of skin 1-2 times weekly to rid dead, superficial surface cells that dull your complexion. You’ll revel in a fresh, dewy glow for days! And, you know what that means? Less makeup and an extra 30 minutes of beauty Zzzz’s.
Get a Grill that Gleams
Glow-on-the-go with purse-perfect SmileActives® Tooth Whitening Pen ($15) in tasty and invigorating Vanilla Mint for instant stain-stopping power after snacking or sipping.
Always a total pain, but routinely cleaning both your make-up and hairbrushes will keep blemish-causing bacteria at bay and dust and dirt from sullying silky strands. Try using a standard make-up brush cleanser you can pick-up from your local beauty supply store, while swiping baby oil through brush bristles. Be sure to rinse all your brushes well with lukewarm water and lay out flat to dry. While you’re cleaning house, this is also a great time to assess what cosmetic essentials may have expired. Toss mascaras and eyeliners after 3-4 months to prevent infections; and toss foundations after one year to prevent pimples.
Pick up an extra pencil case at your local 24hr. pharmacy during the “Back-to-School” sale and stash lip and eyeliners, travel-size deodorant, tampons, bobbie pins/barrettes, blush, bronzer, lipstick/lip gloss/lip scrub/lip balm, safety pins, etc. Keep in your locker or backpack for on-the-go “girly” emergencies.
After sleeping in most of the summer, especially if you were lucky enough to not have to work, pulling yourself from the warm, cozy sheets is going to be even more painful if you didn’t get your requisite 7-9 hours of uninterrupted beauty sleep. So, skip the late-night noshing and slip into the sack. Just be sure you swapped out your cotton pillowcases for silk/satin ones to keep complexion crease-free and strands split-end –free.
Get complexion-perfection by monitoring your skin’s ever-changing needs, especially with the often-sporadic seasonal transition from summer to fall. Usually oily skin becomes normal, and if your skin was well-balanced in the summer, it may tend to become drier come fall. You’ll want to re-assess your skin type, so you can implement the proper regimen, avoiding unnecessary flare-ups and irritation.
Shower/Shave/Bathe Before Bed
Just like we discussed with your hair earlier, either rinse down in the shower or soak in a warm, tranquil bubble bath before bed, so you’re not under the gun come morning. You’ll appreciate this handy hygiene hack when you’re up burning the midnight oil the night before cramming for mid-terms.
Sport a Sunless Tan Faux Ever
Prolong your Kashmere Kollections sunless tan (or real one) by hydrating body head-to-tanned toe both morning and night with either Kashmere Kollections Luxurious Toning Oil or Kashmere Kollections Ultra Smoothing Body Butter. Or, you can layer-up using both together if you suffer from extra-dry skin. Either way, always apply while skin is still damp from bath or shower to lock in luscious, lipid-loving moisture and keep your tan glowing strong. And, just because you’ll be covered from top to bottom in sweaters, boots, and turtlenecks, doesn’t mean you have to live with pasty pale skin all through the long winter. Bring home the bronze by slathering skin once weekly with your Kashmere Kollections Sunless Tanning Lotion to keep skin kissed with some sexy summer color. Just don’t forget to buff bod with your Kashmere Kollections Silken Body Polish between uses to avoid streaks and splotches.
Master “No Make-up” Make-up
Forget those tutorials on YouTube that claim you have to invest an hour of your very valuable morning to achieve that coveted celeb-status “no make-up” make-up. Here’s a much quicker, better way and you’ll still look like you #wokeuplikethis. Depending on your skin type, opt for a CC/BB cream or tinted moisturizer instead of the full-on, war paint worthy of your Insta feed. Save the face plaster for the beauty pageants. During school time, let your skin breathe. You’re going to be too busy with class, studying, work, and what not, and worrying about your face will just distract you from your duties.
True Blue Beauty
Like those endless beachy hair waves, give your peepers a pop of summer love with baby-blue kajal eyeliner. Swipe bottom lash line and smudge with ring finger or make-up brush for a sexy, smoky look. Try the wink-worthy NYX Slide-On Eye Pencil in Sunrise Blue ($8).
Nails with a Nude-ittude
Make your legs look like they literally go on for days by swapping your flip-flop –friendly bright hue for a peachy-pink or beige-pink nude hue. Just like wearing nude heels or ballet flats elongates the gams, so does wearing a pantyhose-pale polish. Step into the season with Topless and Barefoot by Essie ($10).
Toss a pack of facial rice paper or blotting sheets in your school tote to sop up excess oil while on campus all day long. Gently pressing blotting sheets or rice paper into your skin eliminates extra grease while not messing with your make-up, plus you’re not continuously adding powder creating a cakey-looking complexion that will only clog pores and accentuate fine lines.
Multi-tasking Make-up Must-Have’s
Invest in some really cool product picks that pull double and triple duty beauty, like Stila Convertible Color in Gerbana ($25) for a translucent pop of peachy-pink color that gives off that “just back from summer vacay in Saint Tropez.”
Use white eyeliner to brighten and blur for instant “8-hours of sleep” in a stick. Rim the waterline or just dab in corners of eyes for that wide-awake look.
Fake a Faux Fringe
Try heating up your eyelash curler with your blow dryer for 20 seconds before curling lashes for a long-lasting, lush look. Rock the look of falsies without the messy glue and misalignment mishaps by applying some translucent powder between mascara coats for amplified thickness and lusty length.
Set, Save, and Go!
Lock down your look by either using a primer pre -foundation, BB/CC cream, or tinted moisturizer or by spritzing face with a make-up setting spray post-application. Either-or or both enhances the longevity of your look and gets you from the car to class and back to the car again, all while looking like a class act all day.
