Coachella-Cool Couture: The Duds to Ditch and the Duds to Don in the Desert
You can (finally) forget the flower headpiece and still channel your inner flower child this festival season with these unexpectedly refreshing, updated outfit options and fab finds. Here’s what to wear and what to withdraw from your wardrobe come Coachella time (at least for this year, anyway).
Suffice it to say, some of the Coachella style go-to’s have been on repeat for the past decade. And, while we may have a bit of a hard time parting with our beloved and trusty flower head band, fashion bloggers, celeb stylists, and top designers are mixing and matching genres for unforgettable fashion-forward flair. It’s all about taking one or two bohemian festival-friendly pieces and pairing with edgy, street styles, including athliesure wear, for a totally trendy twist on a seemingly burnt-out fashion theme.
What to Ditch
Time to say so long (thankfully) and send to the back of the Coachella closet:
• Flower Headpiece
• Fur Vests
• Suede Vests
• Tan/Camel Suede Booties
What to Don
Re-think the typical, hippie Coachella 70s style replete with fringe and flowers and everything “flowy,” with a 90s grungy, gritty, street-style update. The idea is to mix and match different eras of fashion into your entire ensemble without missing a beat. Keep one boho key piece and layer with a style staple from another memorable fashion era.
Though the 90s are taking precedence in the fashion edition, the hair and makeup for this year’s Coachella looks are redolent of 80s rocker glam. So, you’re really resonating a few decades into one weekend, which is pretty impressive – and cool. “It’s no longer just fringe and flowers head-to-toe,” according to style editor Tracy Taylor at Net-a-Porter. You’re balancing boho with other cult classic, upbeat looks for an entirely, re-imagined Coachella fashion experience. Check out these Cali-cool combos for refreshed festival fashion:
We’re talking splashes of sheer here and there, accented with athletic wear and biker babe garb! Complete the look with a moto or bomber jacket thrown over a sexy, see-thru mesh top and adorn your décolleté with audacious accessories like over-the-top body jewelry and obnoxiously big and heavy hoop earrings. It’s all about your underwear peeking through your outerwear in thin, barely-there, lightweight layers.
The scantily clad and skintight athletic apparel from those infamous 80s Jane Fonda workout videos are back big. We are digging the crocheted styled ones worn under a pair of cute, high-waisted denin short-shorts or with track pants. Finish with strappy sandals or sneaks and you’re desert-set.
From the beach sand to the desert sand, wear a lacy bralette or bright-colored triangle bikini top under a cool, cut-up, off-the-shoulder vintage band tee or under a sheer, flowy print dress. Add a pair of biker boots for star-status style.
Get grunge with 90s street styles, like loose track pants, high-waisted, short-and-shredded denim Daisy Dukes (instead of baggy, hip-hugger ones), paired with black biker boots and a bomber jacket (ditch the denim one this round).
Channel your inner Geisha girl and don one of these timeless and historic Asian style staples. Wear alone with a belt, bare-legged or pair with white leggings and western ankle booties.
Choose from the meshy Material Girl variety, or a black or fluorescent-hued fishnet, or vintage band as mentioned above, and wear over any slinky tube or bikini top or bralette. Try a long, flowy dress and sandals or biker boots for a real “mix-em-all-up” makeover.
Protect those precious peepers with classic, cool aviator style glasses or big, rounded Mary Tyler Moore types.
A safe sand staple style, the sexy, strappy sandal will compliment any couture combo, especially those intricate-looking gladiator ones that go knee-high. Just beware of possible weird and unwanted tan lines. Wear sun protection! Since you’ll most likely be drudging through the desert all day and dancing all night, opt for the flat-heeled ones.
Replace the Coachella cowboy hat you’ve worn the past five festivals with a cute, simple baseball cap and wear it backwards.
Forego the fashion fave fringe purse and opt for a better-for-your-back backpack version instead. And, take it another step back into the 90s and buy one in black.
Track Pants, Athletic-Inspired Tops, and Sneakers
Remember those tracks pants from the 70s that made a couture comeback in the 90s and disappeared again in the mid 2000s? Well, they’re making another apparel appearance and just in time for the festival fairgrounds. This year, bring barre class to Coachella. Pair with a figure-flaunting bodysuit, high-top sneakers, and a sparkly belly chain for a laid-back, yet attention-grabbing style.
Nothing Smells Like Teen Spirit 90s grunge like a cool pair of biker boots. Opt for the mid-calf variety and wear with any outfit, ie, a flowy dress, a pair of leggings, track pants, high-waisted shorts for an instant, elevated ensemble.
