Say So Long To Self-Tanner Slip-Ups with this Guide To Rocking A Flawless Faux Glow

No streaks, no splotches, no incriminating Oompa-Loompa palms, no telltale stains on your brightest whites – just a beautifully bronzed body head-to-tanned- tippy-toe! Check out these self-tanning tips, tricks, how-to’s, and hacks for a successful, seamless “tans” formation – straight from the tube.  All tan. No gerine.

Swimsuit and sandal season is officially underway and if you’re still dreaming of getting goddess-gorgeous, glowing skin with a sunless tanning lotion sans the scorching sun, there’s still time to finally become a self-tanner sage.  Never make a self-tanner mishap or unforgivable faux glow pas again!

Prep, Prime, and Polish for Tanning Perfection

Today’s endless and overwhelming array of innovative sunless tanning products, like super skin-smoothing and ultra-hydrating Kashmere Kollections Sunless Tanning Lotion packed with shea and avocado butters, plus stem-sculpting caffeine, offer believable, beach-bronzing action when applied correctly.  However, self-tanning is not a “one-and-done” process, but requires the proper prepping so skin evenly and deeply absorbs the tanner’s DHA levels that are responsible for developing that deliciously divine, sun-kissed color you’re dying for. So, first things first.  If you wax your skin to remove unwanted hair, be sure you’ve done so at least 24-48 hours prior to tan time, as this gives your pores time to retract and relax and your skin time to clear the reddening and/or irritation.

On tanning day, before hopping in shower, gently dry brush body using a natural-bristled brush starting at feet and working upwards.  This will loosen those superficial surface cells before you even step under the spray.  Once you’re in the shower and you’ve cleansed head-to-toe with your go-to body wash or soap, polish skin with your scent-sational sugar and sunflower and safflower seed oil -infused Kashmere Kollections Silken Body Polish to remove any remaining dead skin that may impede your soon-to-be sunless tanning color, whilst intoxicating your soul. Be sure to rinse your body well, ridding of any sugar granule remnants.

Next, if you shave to remove unwanted hair, now’s the time to do that.  You can also shave prior to buffing body with the Kashmere Kollections Silken Body Polish.  Step from shower and pat body dry with a plush cotton towel.

Bodyguard

This is the step that is commonly ignored, but you really must do it if you want a flawless finish to your faux glow.  On areas that tend to pick up DHA the most, such as elbows, hands, knees, ankles, and feet, slather on a lightweight lotion or sunless tanning barrier cream.  This lubricates the skin, acting like a barrier between skin’s top layer and the DHA.  See, DHA only develops and darkens within the uppermost layers of the skin.

You Must Add Mitt

Using a sunless tan mitt ingeniously buffs, blends, and blurs any self-tanning product into skin for an even, seamless, photo-ready finish with a soft-focus touch.  It’s like having Photoshop in the palm of your hand! A holy grail for getting a gorgeous, foolproof faux glow every time, a flexible fabric made of velvet-like material will ensure streak-free, sun-kissed, and summer-ready skin, while protecting palms from absorbing product, producing unsightly, orange-hued palms.

Plus, you can get creative by highlighting and contouring color on abs, across shoulders and décolleté, and down fronts of legs for a more realistic look with optically-slimming tanning effects.  Add strategic depth and dimension to desired areas by adding a few drops more product, then blending and buffing into skin using circular motions.  If you’re using Kashmere Kollections Sunless Tanning Lotion, you’ll know the revolutionary formula glides on clear, instantly absorbing into skin. There is no bronzing color guide, so if you think you might’ve missed a spot, give your body another once-over of product.  After the second coat, continue to buff, blur, and blend the lotion into skin with mitt until skin is left smooth and non-sticky. This will guarantee that celeb-status airbrushed, beautiful bronze gleaming with red carpet radiance.  Just be patient and get buffing and blending.  The work will be so worth it.

Put Your Best Foot Forward

The feet are probably the most trickiest to tan, as they’re a dead giveaway of a not-so tan-tastic experience if not tanned properly.  So, here’s how you do it. While wearing your tanning mitt, take a small drop of product and add to top of foot, blending all over top of foot, but NOT toes.  When product is ALMOST completely absorbed, take a latex make-up wedge and blend the residual product sitting on top of foot onto and between toes. Whatever residual product is still there, blend down both sides of feet for an even, believably tanned tootsies.  On backs of ankles, take the make-up wedge and glide down both sides of your Achilles tendon.  The key with the feet is to use residual product overlay since the feet tend to pick up the DHA color tenfold.  The worst is walking around in sexy, strappy sandals with too-tanned tootsies.  Don’t be her.

Hands Up

You’ll want to do your hands the exact same way you did your feet.  Apply a teeny drop of sunless tanner to tops of hands and using mitt, blend into skin using circular motions.  When product is almost fully absorbed, take another latex make-up wedge and blend residual product onto and between fingers.  Be sure to get some product in the creases of the knuckles, too.

Face It

If you’re brave enough to don self-tanner on your face, we applaud your valiant efforts.  Personally, we like to just use a matching bronzing powder on our complexions, so if it comes out too dark or splotchy, we can just wash it right off and start all over again.  Overdoing it on the body is one thing, as you can just wear pants and a long-sleeved shirt until it has faded, but you can’t hide your face.  Unless being sequestered to your sofa for five days sounds like joy.

You really have to get it right – right off the bat. But, if you want to venture in that tanning territory, do this.  Using a mitt or latex glove, apply a pea-sized amount for entire face, concentrating the application on the forehead, down temples, down nose, across jaw line, and tops of cheeks – basically wherever the sun would “naturally” hit your face.  Blend and buff to perfection.  Good luck!

We Got Your Back

To reach the middle of your back and not be left with a pasty pale circle, you can attach your tanning mitt to back scratcher, add a few drops of tanner to the mitt, and apply.  Or apply tanner to a back sponge replete with elongated handle and apply that way.  If you’re lucky enough to have a hottie apply it for you, be sure to tell him that using the tanning mitt or his palms will be doing all the talking.

Sun-kissed Skin with Stay-Put Power

Once you’ve applied your self-tanner and it has completely dried, apply baby powder to arm pits, inside elbows, upper back, and between upper thighs to avoid the possibility of sweat streaking your soon-to-be developed color.  Avoid showering/bathing, exercising, or swimming for at least 8-10 hours upon application. And, if you’ve applied your sunless tanner in the morning, wear dark, loose-fitting clothing.  If you’ve applied before bedtime, cover your bed linens with dark sheets to avoid spotting and rub-off.

Once your tan fully develops and you religiously moisturize skin daily, your sunless tans-formation should last anywhere from 7-10 days.  However, after the first few days, your skin will naturally begin to exfoliate and you’ll start seeing subsequent “rub off” on clothing, towels, sheets, toilet seats, etc.  Telltale sunless tanning marks on insides of white clothing and other fabrics can easily be removed using a cotton ball saturated with 2-3% hydrogen peroxide.  For dark-colored clothes and fabrics, you can launder or send to cleaners as you normally would.

You want to wear that bronzed bombshell hue on your body and not everywhere else – like sheets, towels, toilet seat, car seat, sofa, and other light-hued fabrics, especially your finest whites.

Tanner Tips, Tricks, and Hacks

So, you FINALLY achieved that supermodel-sexy sunless tan. You followed all the steps, prepped and primed your skin, blended and buffed to bronzing perfection, and strategically and carefully tanned feet, toes, hands, fingers, and face.  The hard work paid off and you’re rocking a fabulous, fierce faux glow.

But, you’re not out of the woods just yet.

Be sure to keep those bed linens protected with dark sheets and keep hydrogen peroxide and cotton balls stashed in purse just in case you encounter an unceremonious brown spot or streak smack dab on the seat of your brand-new, white-hot leggings.

If your “sun tan” developed way darker than anticipated, we’re jealous! But, seriously, if it’s too dark for your liking, slather body in baby oil or Kashmere Kollections Luxurious Toning Oil for 10-20 minutes to help “break-up” the top layer of DHA.  After 10-20 minutes, hop in shower and wash off with gentle, sulfate-free soap.

If you’re still sporting streaks, you need to pay more attention to our posts!  Just kidding.  Simply take St. Tropez Tan Optimiser Tan  Remover and apply to areas that need to be removed and give it another go.  You can also mix a few teaspoons of baking soda and lemon juice for quick DIY self-tanner removal.

Practice makes pretty perfection.  Happy tanning!
